On March 26th, movie-producer James Cameron touched the deepest part of the ocean.  In the last ten years, Sir Richard Branson through Virgin Galactic shot test pilots into subspace.  In that same span, Google, Verizon, Facebook, and Apple have revolutionized the country’s social fabric and information technologies.  The United States of America is once again exploring and penetrating the Frontier.  America is moving.  All while NASA retired the space shuttle, the landline telephone declined, and smartphones usurped the Blackberry.  All in the space of one ten-year CBO budget projection.

Obama: Telephone never reached widespread use due to lack of government funding

That’s what he was implying, right? Obama on the campaign trail.

“They might have even sided with one of my predecessors, President Rutherford B. Hayes, who reportedly said this about the telephone: ‘It’s a great invention, but who would ever want to use one?’ That’s why he’s not on Mount Rushmore, because he’s looking backwards, he’s not looking forwards.”
Ah yes, we all remember how the promising technology of the telephone was never able to reach widespread use due to lack of government subsidies. If only Rutherford had “looked forward”!!!
Here’s a thought experiment: compare telephones to the DMV in the past 25 years. Telephones have become smaller and portable while incorporating more capabilities. They gained cameras and are now our own miniature personal computers with internet access. The DMV experience has improved minimally if at all over the same time span. Do you think the relative levels of government involvement in each of those has anything to do with their levels of progress? Do you think everyone you know would be carrying iPhones around in their pockets if government had taken over the telephone industry 25 years ago?
